Leather Cap
The Height of Modern Fashion
Over the years the leather cap has come and gone and come again as the times and
fashions change. One of the first memorable leather caps was the original leather aviators cap that became very
popular as the First World War started the world's fascination with flying, before long not only where those who
actually flew wearing these leather caps, but hundreds of kids who dreamed of flying were soon wearing them in
imitation of their heroes.
The Post War Years
During the Second World War many of the Nazi elite wore a peaked leather cap as a part of the
uniform that set them apart from the rest of the Gestapo and the German army as a whole. After the war as America
bloomed during the 50s the motorcycle biker was born out of those who had survived that war and were looking for
something to keep them on the edge much as the war had done.
Those who sought to be the "bad" element took to wearing a similar peaked leather cap as a way
of thumbing their nose at the authorities.
Other continued to wear aviator style leather caps as a way to keep their heads covered while
riding along with a pair of aviator's goggles. It was easy to spot the so called outlaw gangs as they rode into
town with the leather caps and black leather jackets.
The Leather Cap Grows Up
Today there are many different styles of leather caps, while the peaked leather cap is still
around and worn by more than a few bikers, it is no longer associated with the outlaw biker who has significantly
diminished in the US in the last 20 years or so. Many bikers now prefer to go with the leather skull cap as a way
to keep their hair under control or their head warm.
Leather baseball caps have also
caught on not only in the biker world but in the music and fashion world as hip hop stars sport them in music
videos that air channels like MTV. Even women bikers are wearing leather caps these days they are wearing both the
skullcap and the leather baseball cap and for the really daring look you may even find several of them wearing the
peaked style cap that was once reserved for the big, bad outlaw biker.
If you are not into the whole biker scene you can still get away with wearing many of the
different styles of leather caps. The most popular leather cap is the flat cap or as it has been called the newsboy cap. While the original flat caps were made from
wool thanks to a law passed in Britain in the late 16th century in a bid to improve the sales of wool, the latest
trend in these caps is to make them from leather which is far more durable and this year are considered at the
height of fashion.
One advantage to leather caps is that as long as you take good care of them, they will only get
better looking with age. They are also impervious to the elements because leather is naturally waterproof. So if
you really want to look trendy this year consider buying yourself a leather cap in any style and a rainbow of
colors.
