Leather Hat - Find the
best leather hats on sale
Leather has been used to make hats since man first learned to kill wild game and use the skins
to make clothing. The leather hat is usually chosen for its durability as a good
leather hat can last many years as long as it is properly cared for and will continue to look as good as the day
it was first crafted. The first leather hats in recorded history were crafted in Egypt some 3,000 years ago as a
part of their soldiers armor, they have been used by countless armies ever since.
Today the leather hat is still considered a very popular item in the fashion world and despite a
loss of interest in hats in the 60s and 70s leather hats are definitely making a comeback as the new century begins
to warm up. While the leather hat may not be as popular as it was at the turn of the 20th century there is still no
doubt that there is plenty of demand for a good quality leather hat.
Of Men and Cows
When it comes to leather hats the one the springs to mind first and foremost is the leather cowboy hat, first made by John Stetson in 1865.
This hat was the end result of a bet and has since gone on to become legendary. The cowboy
hat is the symbol of not only the Wild West and the men that tamed it, but of America and the true spirit of
freedom that built the country. The idea behind this leather hat was to create a hat that would shield the wearer
from the glare of the desert sun and help keep the heat from getting to his head.
The wide brim was created specifically with this in mind, but this was not the only idea behind
the hat. Leather was used to make the hat durable and waterproof so that when it rained the cowboy's head did not
get wet and the rain flowed off the back of the hat and down his rain slicker. Being waterproof these leather hats
also came in handy as a way to give a drink to the cowboy's horse when there were no streams to drink from.
In the Movies - As Fashionable as
they are Practical
While there have been thousands of leather hats in the movies and countless numbers of them were
cowboy hats, in recent history one of the most famous
leather hats was the one worn by Harrison Ford. The Indiana Jones hat has often been mistaken for a take on the
Australian outback hat, but in fact in all three movies it was a leather fedora hat. This hat soon became a hit with the entire
world as hundreds of guys and more than a few women sought the same look. For a while Stetson made the
replicas although the movie ones were all made by Herbert Johnson. Today you can buy officially licensed
Indiana Jones hats made by Dorfman-Pacific.
There is no doubt at least for the moment that leather hats are very much back in fashion as
both mens and womens hats are being made in a variety of styles and colors, this year it seems like black leather
hats may be the most popular and as for next year we will have to wait and see.
