Throughout History

For most men the type of hat that they choose to wear depends on the occasion or on the weather as there are hats for both hot sunny weather and for the cold wintry weather. Mens caps tend to differ greatly from those designed to be worn by women, both in looks and functionality. Throughout history mens hats have been used as a symbol of their status in society, from the large striped hats that went under the Pharaoh's crown to the top hat worn by much of the aristocracy throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries.

By far the most common and popular mens hats today are mens baseball hats. Not only worn by men, but by many women this simple hat that was first offered for sale in the late 19th century in Spaulding's Baseball Guide where you could find 10 different styles for prices ranging from 12 cents to $2. Today mens baseball caps are used by thousands of manufacturers and others to advertise their products whether they are sports related or the latest musicians.

People of all ages and income levels were this style of mens caps. They are the latest word in mens sun hats as the wide bill help to keep the sun out of the wearer's eyes. This is what made them so popular with baseball players in the first place, as they needed to be able to see what was going on during the game, especially a high fly ball that would otherwise have been difficult to see in the bright summer sunlight.

While the players themselves may where this type of mens caps to make playing the game easier, many of their fans will where their favourite teams caps to show their support. Mens baseball caps are very comfortable to wear and usually feature an adjustable band at the back and open weave cloth for the body of the hat. This open weave makes them cool and comfortable in the summer while the extra wide brim is designed to shade your eyes from the sun.

This style of hat has also been adopted by many different military units around the world for similar reasons. The wide brim shades the soldier's eyes during maneuvers and makes it possible to show you unit's designation with pride. You will also find many police departments throughout the world who issue baseball style caps to the officers instead of the more traditional peaked hat for regular duty purposes.

Kangol caps are one of the more popular mens caps especially amongst some of Hollywood's top male stars. Samuel L. Jackson is rarely ever seen without his, which he wears turned around backwards with the bill to the back. Professional golfer Payne Stewart wears his Kangol with the bill to the front whenever he is on the course. Kangol was founded in 1938 and soon became a major supplier of berets to the military during World War II. The name of the company comes from a combination of the materials they use to make their hats, silk, Angora and wool.

While some mens caps are used to denote rank or authority others are meant to be functional, such as the cowboy hat that was designed to protect the wearer from the desert sun. Others, like the baseball cap can be functional or worn as a statement depending on who is wearing it.
