Ski Hats

Fresh From the Slopes

Winter is definitely the time of year that more people wear hats to keep their heads warm. The number of different styles and colors of ski hats has grown to meet the ever increasing demand as they have no only become more popular with the growth of the sport, but as they have become extremely fashionable with the younger crowd. Thanks in part to several different genres of music the ski hat has become a cultural icon almost as much as a way to keep your head warm in the cold weather.

Staying Warm

In the winter we all know that is keeps up much warmer when we wear a hat and of all the different styles of winter hats available, ski hats are without a doubt one of the warmest hats going. Research has shown that we lose upwards of 80% of our body heat through our heads. By covering your head with a warm knitted ski hat you can reduce that number significantly and keep yourself feeling much warmer all winter long.

No matter what other type of protective and warm winter clothing you wear, if you do not keep your head covered in the winter you are more susceptible to hypothermia and of course colds and flu. By keeping a knitted beanie on your head you can keep the risks down and continue to be able to enjoy your time playing in the snow for a much longer period of time.

You can by ski hats that are made out of various materials, the original wool ones are the warmest. In recent years a number of synthetic materials have been used along with hemp and cotton. You should choose the material that you find the most comfortable as many people find that pure wool can be somewhat itchy.

The original beanie style hat was considered a working man's hat and was not only worn to keep the head warm but as a way to keep their hair back and out of their eyes. Many of these hats were hand knitted by wives and mothers long before machine made versions became available making them accessible to anyone who wanted one.

Modern Fashion Statement

With the vast interest in extreme sports in the last few years the ski hat has gone from a winter necessity to a fashion icon. Thanks in part the Winter X Games, snowboard hats in bright colors and covered with different company logos are seen everywhere, even on the heads of those who have never been anywhere near a snowboard or the ski slopes.

In the last few years many of the musicians in the grunge music scene took to wearing a ski hat as part of their fashion statement along with flannel shirts and old jeans. This of course spawned a new fashion craze as many younger people tend to emulate their favorite stars such as the late Kurt Cobain. The rap scene has also seen its fair share of musicians and fans sporting ski hats even in the middle of summer. Once the denizen of the winter ski slopes these comfortable winter hats are now very much a fixture all year round even in areas where it does not get that cold and there is no snow.
